Readers, Sidespeople and Counters

Readers or Lectors are scheduled to read aloud the Old and New Testament readings during worship services. This gift of reading the Word of the Lord aloud to the congregation does require some prior preparation.

Sides people provide pew bulletins to all entering the church for worship services and offer assistance where required. They receive and present the offerings of the congregation and guide the flow of the communicants to the altar rail during the Eucharist. They are responsible for preparing the hymnal boards, maintaining a safe and tidy worship space and assist with emergencies. Sides people are usually the first ones to greet you at St. John’s and their welcoming manner and helpful disposition makes a long lasting first impression.

Counters - well obviously they “count” in every meaning of the word. They count all the donations in the offering envelopes and open revenue that comes into the church each week and record it in the Vestry Book, before passing it on to the wardens for banking purposes.
